Myoko City sits in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture, about two and a half hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen (bullet train). It's one of Japan's most beloved ski destinations — known not for flash or fanfare, but for the kind of snowfall that keeps people coming back year after year.

The region receives an average of over ten metres of snow each season, fed by cold air moving in off the Sea of Japan and collecting in the Myoko highlands. The result is deep, dry powder on a remarkably consistent basis. Skiers and snowboarders who discover Myoko tend to find it hard to go anywhere else.

The Mountain

Myoko Kogen is the primary resort, with a network of interconnected ski areas including Akakura Onsen and Ikenotaira — offering varied terrain for all levels, from wide groomers to tree runs that hold powder long after a storm. The atmosphere is relaxed and uncrowded compared to more heavily marketed Japanese resorts, and lift queues are rarely something you'll think about.

The Town

The village has a low-key, genuine character. You'll find good ramen, local izakayas, a handful of international restaurants, and the kind of ski town rhythm that feels unhurried. The community has a long history of welcoming international visitors, particularly Australians, who make up a significant share of the foreign visitor market.

Hot Springs

Myoko is onsen country. Multiple hot spring facilities dot the area, ranging from traditional public baths to small ryokan-style retreats. An evening soak after a full day on the mountain is one of those experiences that's easy to take for granted until you're back home.

Getting There

From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama Station, then a short local transfer to Myoko Kogen. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours from Tokyo Station. Transfers can be arranged — ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
